The Willis Wonder
We have all seen Dave & Elaine Willis on the trail in their gray and Bondo 1967 CJ-5 and know that it goes slow. The engine is the original 225 "Dauntless" V6 with an Offenhauser intake, Holly 390 CFM Carb with off-road needle and seat. Headers make the exhaust flow quicker. A Buick pump and a Jeepster box made a tremendous difference in directional control. The front axle is an old Spicer 25 (from a 1952 M38A1) loaded with a Lock-Right, 5:38 gears, 11" brakes and Warn hubs. The rear axle is a Dana 44 (also from a M38A1), Lock-Right, 5:38 gears, R&P full-floating kit and Warn hubs. The gear mixer is a GM SM 420 4 speed out of a 1957 GMC pick-up with a 7.05:1 1st gear. The transfer case is a Spicer 18 with a Novak adapter. The final crawl ratio is about 93 to 1. A Warn overdrive keeps the rig streetable. Trailmaster 3-4" lift springs use SSV shocks to hold Les Schwab Wild Country Mud Terrain 32 x 11.50 x 15’s on the ground. A new Warn XD9000i is on a removable mount. This all works very well when the driver does his part and stays upright.
Dave will play in the woods with this one while he works on his next project, a 1942 Ford GPW.
